The setting is the background of horse racing. This is behind the scenes with the grooms, riders, owners, etc. There are a lot of details and language so you can learn what is really going on. The hero of the story is a trainer. He is the one in charge of the horse and getting him ready for a race. This hero is one of the youngest in the field. His father was a trainer as well. There are a lot of unhappy memories regarding his father so he sets out to be as far from like him as possible. He has to be very careful around women, from employees to the owner's wives. He attracts the attention of all the females around. The heroine of the story is the granddaughter of a wealthy businessman. He is also a horse owner and his horse is being trained and is the favorite to win a big cup this season of the story. However, the granddaughter raised by her mother after her dad died and controlled by the grandfather is a bit of an immature spoiled, self-centered child. From her resume she did not go to college, just skied at a high level until she was injured. The grandfather wants her to go into his company as an employee--all tho I have no idea what position he had in mind as she had absolutely no education or training for anything but skiing. She wants to get out from under his control but she has no money and no job skills so she decides she will open a dog grooming service. Never mind that she has never owned a pet!!! I'm not sure of her age, from her actions I would place her in the 19-22 age bracket.
However, she needs seed money. The grandfather agrees to loan her the money if she can get a job and hold it down for about 60 days. The catch is that he has decided she is going to work in the stales for his trainer. She has zero experience around horses, race or otherwise. But she agrees to the terms and shows up for work. The trainer has no choice but to hire her since her grandfather is one f his wealthy owners and he has the prize horse of the moment. So he puts her to work thinking she will not last a week and that is exactly what the grandfather wants. She has other ideas and sets out to last the whole 60 days. Pretty good storyline so far. There is a bit of mystery as something is going on around the track, men with knives, an orphan boy that is stealing, lost phones, found phones, a body floating in a pond, a stabbing, etc.
SPOILER - just my thoughts but I did not like the heroine. She was immature, acting like a young teen most of the time. She could be told nothing - she knew it all even tho she had no idea what was being told to her. Instead of just asking and learning she had to go off half-cocked acting like she knew what to do next. She was willing to risk the health and well-being of a horse rather than just admit to not doing something she was never told to do in the first place. But since she knew everything anyway it was just assumed she knew that! She had zero respect for other people's property, i.e. his jacket). Leaving the cinch loose was another example of risking his life as well as that of the horse and everyone around when the horse went crazy. Just childish and stupid. I really didn't like that he let her get away with this. Her biggest problem was being raised the little rich girl, she had absolutely no idea of the real world and what it was like to live in it. She takes an advance in pay to place a bet that she lost thinking she knew exactly how to win every race. Yeah, that is how the tracks stay in business. There is "something" going on at the track. You pick up on it from the very first. Instead of telling everything she knows and trying to get help, she either doesn't say anything, she is going to solve it, or she just gives piecemeal and leaves everyone hanging. Again, the arrogance of knowing it all. men with knives, the Mexican mafia and she is going to solve the problem. Right. she can't even take care of herself and she is going to handle all these ruthless guys. She just got on my last nerve.
I did quit reading. She just did one dumb stunt too many for me. And typical of a guy thinking with his other head he let her get away with it all. The things I saw as negative he seemed to see as positives and he liked it. So, I gave up. I'm sure it is a good story if these things don't get to you like they did me! I always like Ms. Petersen's books. I was surprised that this one didn't do it for me. So, I would suggest you read and decide for yourself.

Color My Horse Bev Pettersen 9780987671721 Books Reviews
I have enjoyed everything that I have read by this author. They are realistic for the horse lover, which is refreshing. The mysteries are not predictable. They are engaging and difficult to put Down. This one especially grabbed me and became a favorite because it reminded me of life backstage at a racetrack. The grittiness and baseness, combined with the sense of family and protection. My only complaint and the reason this did not get 5 stars is that she made the two main characters too physically attractive. I became irritated in the beginning with the constant descriptions of womanly attributes and manly physique. For me it detracted from the story. The story would be just as compelling, and maybe even more so had the main characters simply been rugged, plain or wholesome attractive. If I want to read about the beautiful elite, I can pick up a Harlequin!
This romance offers a light, pleasant read thanks to Pettersen's witty style. I also liked the lively description of the animals involved, and the care that the characters show for them, as usual in this author's books. I was slightly disappointed by the male hero this time. I didn't like him so much because at the end he just acts as a fawning womaniser around Jessica, against his better judgement. The mystery is quite shallow and there are too many details about horses' races for my taste. I really liked how the author wraps up the story, though, and I closed the book with a satisfied smile.
I enjoyed this so much! I laughed, I cried... You get the idea. It included a rocky romance, suspense, likable (and a few unlikable) characters, and most of all, an enjoyable story about horse racing. I enjoyed reading about how a horse barn is run, what it takes to train a winner and the complicated relationships between trainers and owners. I especially enjoyed watching Jessica fall in love with horses.
This may not be great literature but I didn't expect it to be. I picked it up in a free offer and had no expectations at all. I honestly would have felt that I had gotten my money's worth if I had paid full price. I used to be much more stingy with that fifth star, reserving it only for truly great books, but have decided that that's not fair to the authors. This was an excellent romance/suspense and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. If tgat isn't worth a good rating and the time to write a quick review, I don't know what is.
